Hainan Province upgraded the typhoon warning from Level 2 to Level 1

The center of super Typhoon Yagi was located at 19.1 degrees north latitude and 115.6 degrees east longitude (about 5,290 km. east of Hainan’s Wenchang City) at 10:00 AM on the 5th of September. The typhoon is moving across the northern part of the South China Sea with a maximum central wind force of 17 on the Chinese scale (58 meters per second). Yagi is expected to move northwest at a speed of 10-15 km. / hour and gradually increase in intensity. It will make landfall in the coastal region between Qionghai, Hainan and Dianbai, Guangdong, with the main part of the typhoon expected to land in the region of Wenchang, Hainan to Xuwen Guangdong with super typhoon force winds of level 17 or above and a wind speed of 56.1-63 meters / second. The typhoon is expected to move into the Beibu Gulf area in the early morning of the 7th. The typhoon is expected to cause level 14-15 wind gusts in the South China Sea region from the day of the 5th to the 7th, with the central rotating area seeing level 16-17 wind forces.

From the night of the 5th through the day of the 7th, Hainan Island will experience severe winds and torrential rains, with cumulative rainfall of 350-450 mm in Danzhou, Baisha, and Changjiang, and up to 600 mm in some areas. Haikou, Lingao, Chengmai, Ding'an, Wenchang, Qionghai, Tunchang, Qiongzhong, Wuzhishan, and Dongfang are expected to receive 250-350 mm of rain, with up to 400 mm in some areas. Other Hainan cities and counties can expect 100-250 mm. In addition, from the night of the 5th to the 6th, the northeastern half of Hainan Island will be subject to strong level 13 - 16 level winds, and from the night of the 5th to the day of the 7th, the southwestern half of Hainan will be subject to strong 9-12 level winds.

The Haikou City Flood, Wind, and Drought Prevention Headquarters announced the suspension of all school classes, work, transportation, flights, parks, and business as of 12 noon on Sept. 5.

Due to Typhoon Yagi, this year’s 11th named tropical storm, all flights to and from Haikou’s Meilan International Airport are expected to be canceled from 20:00 on Sept. 5 to 24:00 on Sept. 6.
