Recently, the “We're in This Together, Mutual Sharing of Cultures” activity brought four international content creators (with a combined total of five million followers on platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok) to visit China's only tropical island province. Hailing from Italy, Canada, and the U.K., they used their unique perspectives to look at Hainan and the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port and their various ways of writing, making videos, and making photographs to capture its essence, tell its story to the world, and showcase its beauty.
All four of the content creators who participated in this event have been sharing their works and travel experiences on domestic and international social media platforms for a long time and have acquired large numbers of followers.
Fabio Nodari is an Italian photographer keen on capturing natural scenery, cultural landscapes and unique cultural elements around the world. Showing a colorful and fascinating world through the lens, he often posts his photographs on Instagram and Twitter.
Fabio has been to many Chinese provinces for both work and holiday. Other than Hainan, some of his favorites include Yunnan, Guizhou, and Hunan. On this trip to Hainan, he spoke about the Hainan Coastal Scenic Highway's connecting the province's attractions into a convenient itinerary for self guided travel. Mr. Nodari's plan to see the 'multiple-facets' and explore the mysterious charm of this tropical island included going to Ledong, Sanya, Lingshui, and Wanning.
Yasmin Von Roon has a master's degree in international affairs and global governance from the School of International Education of Zhejiang University. She uses platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube to show her audience the cultural experiences and customs she has encountered during her travels throughout China.
According to Ms. Von Roon "Hainan's tropical scenery is different from what I have seen elsewhere.” Her favorite parts are the stunning coastline and the delicious dessert called Qingbuliang.
Jared A. Faa is a Canadian internet celebrity with nearly 400,000 followers on YouTube. His videos focus on the contrast between Chinese and Western cultures and the differences between life in China and other countries. Showing the similarities and differences between Chinese and foreign cultures in a creative way, his videos also reveal his love and respect for Chinese culture.
Because his parents were foreign teachers at Hainan Middle School, Jared moved to Hainan from Canada as a two year old and lived here for six years in the 1990s. When talking about his feelings for Hainan, he said, "Hainan is my Chinese hometown!”
"I clearly remember being a kid playing on the school campus. Coming back a few years later, I often played basketball, went to the beach to eat barbecue, and had the local dessert known as fried ice. These are things I will never forget." Jared said that he has released many videos with Hainan as the theme including a Father's Day video of images and of Hainan life captured by his father in the 1990s.
Harvey Charles from the UK has a deep affinity for China and Chinese culture. He has opened social media accounts on YouTube, Red, and bilibili where he often expresses his love for China. He records his daily life in China including tasting food, visiting attractions, and communicating with local people.
Regularly responding to fans' comments and private messages on everything from questions about Chinese culture or confusion in learning Chinese, Harvey is a patient source of answers and help. "I can't wait to learn more about Hainan's humanities, sports, technological innovation, and industrial development,” he said.
Using observable and tangible cultural experiences, this ongoing event series (sponsored by the China Internet Development Foundation and jointly organized by Hinews and the Hainan International Media Center) invites top foreign content creators to use their lenses to show the world an "immersive" and “charming” Hainan Free Trade Port and Hainan Coastal Scenic Highway.
