Hainan isn’t exactly known for its waterfalls. After all, the ones in this island province aren’t particularly imposing or powerful. What they do bring, however, is a harmonious beauty amid the mountains and forests as they throw their refreshing mist into the surrounding air. Recently, Italian photographer Fabio Nodari visited one of these waterfalls—the Nanta Reservoir Waterfall located in Sanya’s Yucai Ecological Zone—to capture its beauty from every angle.

Due to recent heavy rain and increased inflow upstream, the Nanta Reservoir in Sanya’s Yucai Ecological Zone is overflowing, sending a curtain of water down 30 meters over the top of the reservoir’s arch dam to form a manmade waterfall. From afar, the first thing you notice is the mist that fills the air above, catching the light like a shimmering cloud. Move in closer and you can feel the full force of this graceful torrent.

Fabio, enraptured by the stunning scenery before him, deployed his camera drone to take footage of the Nanta Reservoir. “When people think about Sanya, the first thing that comes to their mind is most likely the beach life, or surfing or something like that. But maybe you have no idea, there are many other interesting things to do and to see. For example, here in the Yucai Ecological Zone, you can see a lot of nature in the mountains, and you can also enjoy some local ethnic culture of the Li ethnic group,” explained Fabio.

In addition to its vistas, Nanta is also home to an art village with colorful murals – a great place to visit for those who know where to look. Wandering along the alleys in the village, Fabio shot these kaleidoscopic creations, taking in the natural surroundings and cultural charm.
