Recently, Italian photographer Fabio Nodari visited the West Island Marine Cultural Tourism Resort on the last stop of his trip in Hainan, where he experienced how Hainan bring the tropical vibe at 18 degrees north latitude.

18 degrees north latitude is one of the most magical geographical areas on earth, being one of best zones for vacationing. More formally known as Ximaozhou Island, this small island is located in Sanya Bay, 8 nautical miles southwest of Sanya, China's only tropical coastal city. Despite its diminutive size of just 2.8 square kilometers, its long history, lush vegetation, rugged rocks, vast and clear water, and colorful underwater world have brought this island much acclaim. In 2017, West Island was awarded the title of "China's Most Beautiful Fishing Village."

After arriving on West Island by ferry, Fabio followed the crowd out through the Cultural Square and came to the north shore of the island. The first thing that caught his eye was the variety of fun marine activities. He saw some tourists sailing leisurely on the sea, while others on jet skis satisfied their need for speed. Yet more tourists donned wet suits and dove down to the crystal clear seabed, interacting with marine life around the coral reefs. On the nearby beach, people from all over the world took in nature at her most beautiful.

Local lore says that more than 400 years ago, several families from Putian, Fujian, sailed along China's eastern coast to Hainan in search of more prosperous waters. No sooner had their boat reached the waters off Yazhou (modern-day Sanya) than it was hit by a sudden storm, forcing them to take refuge on West Island, where they began making a living by fishing. Some generations later, their population grew and villages began taking shape.

A few hundred meters along the island's east coast from the main tourist area lies a small but ancient fishing village. Here, Fabio saw low, damp huts built out of coral centuries ago. The village boasts a seaside reading room converted from an abandoned fishing boat. Visitors can also stop by the Women's Militia Memorial Hall to hear the tale of how the women of West Island came to its defence.

"This is my first visit to West Island. It's really great and extremely beautiful. Not only is the sea water crystal clear, but the environment on the island makes me feel like I'm in a tropical paradise. I highly recommend everyone to come here," said Fabio.
