Young people are the most vigorous and enterprising… A nation will be full of hope and have a great tomorrow when its younger generations have ideals, ability, and a strong sense of responsibility.
"The Power of Youth and Dreams," a series co-created by Hinews and Hainan International Media Center, puts the spotlight on ten Chinese and foreign young people who have pursued their aspirations and forged shining stories rooted in openness and innovation during their many years in Hainan and China. Through their actions, they demonstrate their shouldering of social responsibility, becoming a bridge for intercultural exchanges. Their stories motivate others to realize their dreams in China and contribute their efforts to building a community with a shared future for mankind.
Wang Yueqi is not a typical animal rescuer—she dedicates her time to saving stranded whales. Earlier this year, an injured pilot whale washed up on the shores of Haitang Bay, and was later named Haitang after the bay. The whale ‘s time was running out, so the Blue Ribbon Ocean Conservation Association stepped in, rallying volunteers to save Haitang’s life. As soon as Wang Yueqi heard the call, she hurried to pitch in.
Wang spent time with Haitang nearly every day, carefully putting on ointments, feeding the whale, and doing other important rehabilitation tasks. To make sure Haitang got enough nutrition, she spent nearly 50,000 yuan of her own money to buy fresh squid that she hand-fed to the whale. Her compassion and perseverance led to Wang being called ‘Haitang’s godmother’. Wang and Haitang spent over 100 days together, forming a close emotional bond. Wang’s volunteer work puts the idea of harmony between humans and nature into action, showing the deep love of Chinese young people for the ocean as well as their strong sense of responsibility. “I only made a very small contribution, but I believe that if we all work together we have a lot of power to protect our common home,” said Wang.
This series is funded by the China Internet Development Foundation (CIDF).
