Young people are the most vigorous and enterprising… A nation will be full of hope and have a great tomorrow when its younger generations have ideals, ability, and a strong sense of responsibility.

"The Power of Youth and Dreams," a series co-created by Hinews and Hainan International Media Center, puts the spotlight on ten Chinese and foreign young people who have pursued their aspirations and forged shining stories rooted in openness and innovation during their many years in Hainan and China. Through their actions, they demonstrate their shouldering of social responsibility, becoming a bridge for intercultural exchanges. Their stories motivate others to realize their dreams in China and contribute their efforts to building a community with a shared future for mankind.

Have you ever heard Hainan referred to as the "Butterfly Kingdom"?

Jesse Adams, from Wisconsin, first came to Hainan in 2005. Marrying a girl from Dongfang, he settled down for a few years before they and their kids went to the United States for him to continue his studies. However, Hainan was always in his heart.

If you are aware of the scope and breadth of Hainan's butterfly population, it might just be because of Jesse. Working in outdoors education in his wife's hometown in western Hainan, this "citizen scientist" uses his camera to photograph butterflies, record their species, and count their numbers. This data is then uploaded to natural science websites.

For Jesse, this is more than just a personal hobby to share on social media. His observational data is helping contribute towards professional work in species conservation.

“I love Hainan. I love nature. Living here I'm happy to participate in the protection of Hainan's nature, and I hope more people will visit Hainan and experience it's uniqueness.”
